WhatsApp Introduces Disappearing Messages

More intimate, private chats are coming to WhatsApp

WhatsApp has announced, after months of testing, that all users can now use its ‘disappearing messages’ feature. From today, messages can now be marked to disappear after seven days.

As explained by WhatsApp:

“When disappearing messages is turned on, new messages sent to a chat will disappear after 7 days, helping the conversation feel lighter and more private. In a one-to-one chat, either person can turn disappearing messages on or off. In groups, admins will have the control.”

Although it’s starting with a seven-day lifespan, WhatsApp may look at updating this in the future. “We will keep an eye on feedback about how people are using it and liking it and see if it needs adjusting in the future,” a spokesperson said. “For now we are starting with seven days, because it feels like a nice balance between the utility you need for global text-based conversations and the feeling of things not sticking around forever.”
