The Music Game Experience: Fornite

The Fortnite X Ariana Grande ‘Rift Tour’ Concert Gameplay Brought The Music Game Experience Up A Notch

Fortnite – the popular battle royale video game developed by Epic Games and released in 2017 – has evolved into more than just a game, now a frequent host of in-game concerts featuring big shot music artists.

Cast your mind back to April 25th 2020 when, in the midst of lockdown, American rapper Travis Scott performed virtually within Fortnite in front of 27.7 million viewers. Since then, the bar for music game experiences has only risen, set to a particularly high level earlier this month by teen pop idol turned R&B star, Ariana Grande.

From August 6th to 8th, Fortnite hosted an event called the Rift Tour, headlined by the singer, designed to take players on a musical journey into “magical new realities” where “Fortnite and Ariana Grande collide.”

Prior to the three day music event, Grande gave her fans a sneak peek on Instagram at her outfit for the occasion: a glittering skin – available fleetingly for purchase in the Fortnite shop – on an avatar with a replication of her signature high ponytail.

The concert itself was a treat for Fortnite and Ariana Grande fans; whilst dazzling, kaleidoscopic visuals erupted throughout entertaining gameplay sequences of mountains, monsters and more, the star performed several of her hits from across her discography.

Head Of Brand at Epic Games Phil Rampulla has big plans for future projects, striving to build a “metaverse”: an immersive digital world where users can gather for shared experiences online. Stay tuned, as in-game concerts are only going to get bigger, better and all the more intoxicating.
