#PassTheMic – A Way to Discover New Creative Talent
Today, Reggie Yates launched his #PassTheMic challenge on TikTok. This challenge, which asks users to submit a piece of creative content using that hashtag, is the award-winning British actor, director writer and broadcaster’s attempt to unearth hot new talent on the app.
When Reggie Yates refers to “creative content,” he is not excluding any artistic practices. You could post, for example, poetry, photography, a painting, a piece of music or short film. The possibilities are endless – it’s just down to the innovative TikTokers of Gen Z to put together something inspiring in a catchy short-form video.
Reggie’s challenge is a follow-on from his youth mentorship scheme, called the Pass the Mic initiative. This mentor scheme, which Reggie launched earlier in 2020, sought to mentor and educate young creatives aiming to penetrate the music industry. Now, he’s extending his helping hand out to TikTokers with similar creative aspirations.
Reggie stated, “This year has been particularly tough for anyone trying to get into the arts. Even during the best of times, so many talented young people miss out on their shot due to lack of opportunity, circumstance, or means. I started Pass The Mic to change this, giving the best talent a boost into the industry. I’m delighted to partner with TikTok to take the programme to its talented community and to offer a real learning opportunity to someone out there. I can’t wait to see the best TikTok has to offer.”
The winner of the competition, which closes on December 18th, will bag a one-on-one mentoring session with with Reggie and 2 weeks of work experience at TikTok.
Reggie, who will judge the competition himself, has set up a TikTok account @regyates, where he will be be posting various tips and recourses for those interested in becoming musicians, artists and other creative professions.
If you want to get involved in the challenge, you have from now until the 18th December to get your creative thinking cap on. Head on over TikTok and don’t forget to hashtag #PassTheMic.
